Dental Crowns vs. Dental Fillings: Which One Do You Need?

Dentists rely dental crowns and fillings to help repair patients’ broken or decayed teeth, and they are known to last nearly two decades before needing replacement. With both being used regularly to improve smiles, how can you know which one is right for you? Read on to learn how your dentist will determine which restoration will deliver the best results.

When is a Dental Crown Recommended?

Dental crowns are small “caps” that offer superior protection to damaged or severely decayed teeth. Crafted from a variety of materials (gold, porcelain, zirconia, porcelain-fused-to-metal), these restorations are offered by many dentists to achieve more visually pleasing aesthetics.

These restorations are custom-made to fit over natural teeth, mimicking their size, shape, and shade. With optimal care, they can last nearly 20 years, but not everyone needs a dental crown.

You can expect your dentist to recommend this type of treatment if:

  • You have sustained severe facial trauma that causes a tooth to break.
  • You have worsening decay that is weakening the tooth, causing it to no longer be able to support itself.
  • You recently received a root canal.
  • You recently received a dental implant.

When is a Dental Filling Recommended?

A dental filling is commonly referred to as a “tooth-colored filling” and consists of composite resin that fills in the space left behind by a cavity. Instead of relying on regular amalgam, which contains mercury and is highly visible, dentists opt for composite resin that can be color-matched to blend in with your existing smile.

As a malleable solution, it is more flexible than metal, which means less of your natural tooth structure needs to be removed. Once in place, tooth-colored fillings can last 10-15 years (or more) with proper care.

Your dentist will suggest a dental filling if:

  • You have a small, decayed area of your tooth that needs repairing.
  • Your tooth is not cracked but needs a filling to repair minor decay.
  • You need a quick fix to repair your tooth (you can see results in a single appointment, but should never dismiss the need for a dental crown if your dentist recommends it)

Why You Should Entrust Your Dentist to Decide

Your dentist will evaluate the severity of your tooth damage and determine whether a filling or crown is right for the situation. Using digital imaging and careful examination, their expertise will guide them to the appropriate option, so your smile remains strong, healthy, and fully intact.

Regardless of whether you need a dental crown or filling, trust that your dentist will deliver the kind of results you deserve so that you can continue to enjoy life to its fullest.
